On January 15th one of the cartoonists slain in the Charlie Hedbo attack was laid to rest outside Paris. Bernard Verlhac, who drew under the name ‘Tignous’, was 57 years old and a longtime member of the group known as Cartoonists for Peace.
In tribute to Tignous, his coffin was adorned by fellow cartoonists with humorous sayings and cartoons. Thousands of people gathered outside the Montreuil, France town hall where a private family service was held in Verhlac’s honor. As the coffin was brought outside, the crowd cheered and applauded. The coffin was carried from the service to it’s final resting place at Pere Lachaise cemetery where a separate ceremony was held.
