Today one more police officer was laid to rest. This time we said goodbye to Deputy Sheriff Darren H. Goforth, who was tragically slain on August 28th as he fueled his car in a suburb outside of Houston, Texas. On Monday, September 7th, Lieutenant Charles Joseph Gliniewicz of the Fox Lake Illinois Police Department will be buried. He was gunned down on September 1st as he investigated suspicious activity.
The circumstances surrounding both of these officers’ deaths are difficult to comprehend and have made them particularly newsworthy. By any measure, both losses were senseless and heartbreaking.
As we think about the people who knew these men personally as a spouse, father, son, or friend, it is a good time to take a moment to remember all the police officers who have lost their lives in the line of duty. So far this year, there have been 83 officers killed while doing their jobs. You can learn about each of these individuals by visiting the Officer Down Memorial Page. The page also memorializes the brave K-9s who have lost their lives in the line of duty.
