Bob Suter, 57, member of the legendary “Miracle on Ice” Olympic hockey team, dies of a heart attack.

On September 9, 2014 Robert Allen Suter, one of the stars of the legendary 1980 U.S. Olympic team died of an apparent heart attack. Suter was found at Capitol Ice Arena in Middleton, WI where he was director and part owner.

“It’s a tough day for our sport, having lost a great friend and ambassador of the game,” USA Hockey said in a statement. “Bob Suter will always be remembered for his role as a member of the 1980 Miracle on Ice Team that captivated our country and whose impact is impossible to measure.

“His legacy, however, is far beyond that as he dedicated his life to advancing hockey and helping young people achieve their dreams. Bob’s positive impact on our sport will be felt for generations to come.”

Despite his small size, Bob Suter was a feared hockey defenseman. He was a standout at the University of Wisconson between 1975 and 1979. From college, he went on to earn a spot on the 1980 Olympic team and participate in the “Miracle on Ice.” He had a brief minor league hockey career. At the time of his death he was part owner and director of Capitol Ice Arena in Middleton, WI. He was also a youth hockey coach and owner of Gold Medal Sports, a sporting good store.

Suter’s son, Ryan, currently plays in the NHL for the Minnesota Wild. His son, Garrett plays for the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point in the Northern Collegiate Hockey Association. His brother, Gary, played in the NHL.
