2014 saw many fan favorites bite the dust. Some of these TV character deaths were not surprising since series such as “Boardwalk Empire”, “True Blood”, and “Sons of Anarchy”, famous for high body counts, saw their runs come to an end. True to form, these series went out with guns blazing. “Game of Thrones”, as always, offered up its usual ration of gruesome deaths, while “Under the Dome”, “American Horror Story”, and “Homeland” killed off lots of familiar faces.
RIZZOLI AND ISLES
Among the character kill offs were some shockers. Will Gardner’s death on “The Good Wife,” Zoe Barnes on “House of Cards,” and Joss Carter on “Person of Interest” certainly deserve a vote in this category.Who do you think was the most surprising character death this year? Unfortunately, the loss of several characters was brought on due to the loss of the actor. Ralph Waite (“NCIS”), James Rebhorn (“Homeland”) and Lee Thompson Young (“Rizzoli and Isles”) all passed away this year.
TV gives us lots of deaths but it doesn’t often show the dead being memorialized. This year was a little different. We saw several moving tributes to beloved characters.
- Bones offered a send-off for Lance Sweet in a simple hill top ceremony.
- Rizzoli & Isles paid tribute to both the character, Frost, and to Lee Taylor Young with a moving memorial service. Angie Harmon’s character, Jane Rizzoli, delivered an emotional eulogy to the character and you couldn’t help but think she was talking about Young as well.
- In tribute to both the character Jackson Gibbs and the actor Ralph Waite, “NCIS” provided the character with a moving military funeral.
- “The Newsroom” honored Charlie Skinner with a well-attended affair. While we didn’t see much of the actual service, we did get a glimpse into the aftermath of Charlie’s death from the view point of his grandson.
- “Homeland” shared the funeral of Carrie’s father and we witnessed the emotional eulogy she delivered.
- “How I Met Your Mother” actually filmed a funeral for the “Mother” but it never aired.
